US LEAVES UNHRC OVER ALLEGED BIAS AGAINST ISRAEL

On Tuesday [June 19, 2018], Nikki Haley announced that the United States was withdrawing from the United Nations Human Rights Council. Listing the grievances of the council, Haley commented, “The world’s most inhumane regimes continue to escape its scrutiny, and the council continues politicizing scapegoating of countries with positive human rights records in an attempt to distract from the abusers in its ranks.” At the centre of the scapegoating is Israel, which has received 76 out of the 311 resolutions the council has passed. Commenting on the decision taken by the US, Benjamin Netanyahu said, “For years, the UNHRC has proven to be a biased, hostile, anti-Israel organization that has betrayed its mission of protecting human rights.”

NEW HEAD OF THE JEWISH AGENCY

Yitzhak Herzog, former head of the Zionist union, has been recommended to become the next chairmen of the Jewish Agency. The Jewish agency exists to connect the global Jewish family, bring Jews to Israel, and Israel to Jews, by providing meaningful Israel engagement and facilitating Aliyah. They also seek to build a better society in Israel – and beyond – by energizing young Israelis and their worldwide peers to rediscover a collective sense of Jewish purpose. Herzog is expected to assume his position on August 1, 2018 following approval from the Jewish Board of Governors.

SARA NETANYAHU INDICTED FOR FALSE CHARGES

On Thursday [June 21, 2018], Sara Netanyahu was indicted for fraud with aggravated circumstances and breach of public trust. The Prime Minister’s wife was accused of obtaining state funding for NIS 359,000 in hundreds of prepared food orders. Although Netanyahu is not expected to get jail time, the trial is expected to take place after the fall High Holidays.

45 ROCKETS FIRED FROM GAZA, ISRAEL RETALIATES

Nearly 45 rockets were fired from Gaza toward Israel last Tuesday night [June 19, 2018]. The rockets were launched following an Israeli military strike against Hamas infrastructure that supported the launching of “burning balloons” intended to burn and destroy Israeli agriculture. Out of the 45 missiles that were launched, Israel’s Iron Dome system intercepted seven. The remaining rocket fire caused damage to buildings and vehicles, and one landed in the proximity of a kindergarten.
