Jesus the Messiah is betrayed by Judas.
PROPHECY: “Even my close friend, whom I trusted, he who shared my bread, has lifted up his heel against me.” Psalm 41:9
FULFILLMENT: “Then Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, went to the chief priests to betray Jesus to them.” Mark 14:10

Messiah is forsaken by His disciples.
PROPHECY: “‘Awake, O sword, against my shepherd,against the man who is close to me!’ declares the LORD Almighty. ‘Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’”Zechariah 13:7
FULFILLMENT: “Then everyone deserted him and fled.” Mark 14:50

The price of Messiah’s betrayal.
PROPHECY: “I told them, ‘If you think it best, give me my pay; but if not, keep it.’ So they paid me thirty pieces of silver.” Zechariah 11:12
FULFILLMENT: “[Judas] asked, ‘What are you willing to give me if I hand him over to you?’ So they counted out for him thirty silver coins.” Matthew 26:15

How the betrayal money is used.
PROPHECY: “And the LORD said to me, ‘Throw it to the potter’ – the handsome price at which they priced me! So I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw them into the house of the LORD to the potter.” Zechariah 11:13
FULFILLMENT: “When Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty silver coins to the chief priests and the elders. ‘I have sinned,’ he said, ‘for I have betrayed innocent blood.’ ‘What is that to us?’ they replied. ‘That’s your responsibility.’ So Judas threw the money into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself. The chief priests picked up the coins and said ‘It is against the law to put this into the treasury, since it is blood money.’ So they decided to use the money to buy the potter’s field as a burial place for foreigners.” Matthew 27:3-7

Messiah is flogged & beaten.
PROPHECY: “I offered my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard.” Isaiah 50:6
FULFILLMENT: “Then he released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified…They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again.” Matthew 27:26, 30

Messiah is shamed & dishonoured.
PROPHECY: “You know how I am scorned, disgraced and shamed.” Psalm 69:19a FULFILLMENT: “They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him.” Matthew 27:28

Messiah is attacked.
PROPHECY: “Strike the shepherd and the sheep will be scattered.” Zechariah 13:7 FULFILLMENT: “Then Jesus told them, ‘This very night you will all fall away on account of me, for it is written: I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’” Matthew 28:31

They cast lots for Messiah’s garments.
PROPHECY: “They divide my garments among them and cast lots for my clothing.” Psalm 22:18
FULFILLMENT: “‘Let’s not tear it,’ they said to one another. ‘Let’s decide by lot who will get
it.’ This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled which said, ‘They divided my garments among them and cast lots for my clothing.’ So this is what the soldiers did.” John 19:24

Messiah is silent at His trial.
PROPHECY: “He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a
lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth.” Isaiah 53:7
FULFILLMENT: “Then Pilate asked him, ‘Don’t you hear the testimony they are bringing against you?’ But Jesus made no reply, not even to a single charge — to the great amazement of the governor.” Matthew 27:13-14

Messiah is crucified.
PROPHECY: “But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all … Yet it was the LORD’S will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and though the LORD makes his life a guilt offering, he will see his offspring and prolong his days, and the will of the LORD will prosper in his hand.” Isaiah 53:5-6, 10
FULFILLMENT: “Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified.” John 19:16
“When they came to the place called the Skull, there they crucified him, along with the criminals – one on his right, the other on his left.” Luke 23:33

Messiah is thirsty.
PROPHECY: “I am worn out calling for help; my throat is parched.” Psalm 69:3
FULFILLMENT: “Later, knowing that all was now completed, and so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, ‘I am thirsty.’” John 19:28

Messiah is given vinegar to drink.
PROPHECY: “They put gall in my food and gave me vinegar for my thirst.” Psalm 69:21 FULFILLMENT: “A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips.” John 19:29
“There they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall; but after tasting it, he refused to drink it.” Matthew 27:34

They stare at Messiah during His crucifixion.
PROPHECY: “People stare and gloat over me.” Psalm 22:17b
FULFILLMENT: “And sitting down, they kept watch over him there.” Matthew 27:36

Messiah’s hands & feet are pierced.
PROPHECY: “They have pierced my hands and my feet.” Psalm 22:16b
FULFILLMENT: “It was the third hour when they crucified him.” Mark 15:25

Messiah’s side is pierced.
PROPHECY: “They will look on me, the one they have pierced.” Zechariah 12:10b
FULFILLMENT: “The people stood watching.” Luke 23:35a
“One of the soldiers pierced Jesus’ side with a spear.” John 19:34a

Messiah’s heart is broken.
PROPHECY: “I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart has turned to wax; it has melted away within me.” Psalm 22:14
FULFILLMENT: “One of the soldiers pierced Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water.” John 19:34 [Note: The blood and water issuing from His side indicate a rupture of the heart, i.e., a broken heart.]

Messiah is taunted by the crowd.
PROPHECY: “All who see me mock me; they hurl insults, shaking their heads: ‘He trusts in the Lord; let the Lord rescue him. Let him deliver him, since he delights in him.’” Psalm 22:7-8
FULFILLMENT: “Those who passed by hurled insults at him … In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him. ‘He saved others,’ they said, ‘but he can’t save himself! He’s the King of Israel! Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. He trusts in God. Let God rescue him now if he wants him, for he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” Matthew 27:39, 41-43

Messiah is the Lamb of God.
PROPHECY: “He was led like a lamb to the slaughter.” Isaiah 53:7
FULFILLMENT: “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” John 1:29

Messiah intercedes for our sins.
PROPHECY: “He bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors. Isaiah 53:12 FULFILLMENT: “Jesus said, ‘Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.’” Luke 23:34

Messiah cries out in His suffering.
PROPHECY: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” Psalm 22:1
FULFILLMENT: “About the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice … ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?’” Matthew 27:46

Messiah’s appearance is damaged.
PROPHECY: “His appearance was so disfigured beyond that of any man and his form marred beyond human likeness.” Isaiah 52:14b
FULFILLMENT: “But he had Jesus flogged … They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head … They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again.” Matthew 27:26b, 28a, 30

Messiah’s cry of victory & triumph.
PROPHECY: “For he has done it.” Psalm 22:31b [In the original Hebrew it reads, “It is finished!”]
FULFILLMENT: “When he had received the drink, Jesus said, ‘It is finished.’ With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.” John 19:30

Messiah’s bones are not broken.
PROPHECY: “It must be eaten inside one house; take none of the meat outside the house. Do not break any of the bones.” Exodus 12:46 [Note: Not a bone of the first Passover Lamb was to be broken; so it was also with Messiah.]
FULFILLMENT: “But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs … These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled: ‘Not one of his bones will be broken.’” John 19:33, 36

Messiah is associated with sinners.
PROPHECY: “He was numbered with the transgressors.” Isaiah 53:12b
FULFILLMENT: “When they came to the place called the Skull, there they crucified him, along with the criminals.” Luke 23:33a

The Messiah is cut off or dies.
PROPHECY: “After the sixty-two ‘sevens,’ the Anointed One will be cut off and will have nothing.” Daniel 9:26a.
FULFILLMENT: “‘You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish.’ [Caiaphas] did not say this on his own, but as high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the Jewish nation, and not only for that nation but also for the scattered children of God, to bring them together and make them one.” John 11:50-52

Messiah battles & conquers the evil one.
PROPHECY: “And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.” Genesis 3:15
FULFILLMENT: “They crucified him.” John 19:18 [The heel of Messiah Jesus was bruised, for when he was crucified nails were driven through His feet.]
“Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out. But I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to myself.” John 12:31-32

Messiah is executed as a criminal, but buried in a rich man’s tomb.
PROPHECY: “He was assigned a grave with the wicked and with the rich in his death, though he had done no violence, nor was any deceit in his mouth.” Isaiah 53.9
FULFILLMENT: “As evening approached, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus. Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him. Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, and placed it in his own new tomb that he had cut out of the rock. He rolled a big stone in front of the entrance to the tomb and went away.” Matthew 27:57-60
